Lying in Coffins While Alive: Japan’s Creepy New Way to Chill Out

Hey everyone, Paranormal Enthusiast here. A few nights ago I was scrolling through the internet and ran into this article on the New York Post that genuinely gave me the creeps β€” in a weird, not scary way. Apparently in Japan people are now paying to climb into real coffins and lie there for half an hour… while still very much alive. Just to relax and de-stress.

I thought it was some dark joke at first, but no β€” it’s a real thing. There are companies and even funeral homes offering these β€œcoffin therapy” sessions. You go in, choose your coffin (some places have cute, brightly colored ones that look more like fancy gift boxes), and just stay there. Lid open if you’re claustrophobic, lid closed if you want the full experience.

You can pick soft music, have a video projected on the inside of the lid, or just lie in total darkness and silence. And apparently a lot of people walk out feeling strangely calm and grateful to be breathing.

Grave Tokyo

The whole idea is sold as a way to confront mortality: face death for 30 minutes, feel how fragile life is, and suddenly everyday worries seem smaller. Some people even book bigger coffins and lie there with a partner or friend β€” like a bizarre couples’ therapy. I don’t know if it’s genius or completely unhinged, but it’s definitely one of the strangest wellness trends I’ve seen.

What really gets under my skin is how normal this seems in Japan. They already have cafΓ©s where you can drink coffee inside mock coffins, and now this. It’s like they took the phrase β€œrest in peace” and decided to test-drive it early. Part of me finds it deeply unsettling, part of me wonders if it might actually help with anxiety. Lying still in a coffin, thinking about the end β€” that’s some heavy psychological stuff.

I haven’t tried it (and honestly, probably never will β€” staring at the inside of a coffin lid for half an hour sounds like my personal nightmare), but I can’t stop thinking about it. It’s creepy, it’s bizarre, and it’s oddly fascinating. Have you heard about this before? Would you ever try lying in a coffin just to unwind? Or does the idea make your skin crawl?
