IAEA Confirms Damage to Buildings at Iran’s Natanz Underground Nuclear Facility Amid US-Israeli Strikes

IAEA Confirms Damage to Entrance Buildings at Iran’s Natanz Underground Nuclear Facility

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) just confirmed fresh damage at Iran’s key underground nuclear site in Natanz. Analysts spotted this through recent satellite imagery, right after the latest US-Israeli airstrikes hit the region.

Experts at the IAEA state that strikes targeted the entrance buildings of the Natanz Fuel Enrichment Plant (FEP). This underground facility plays a central role in Iran’s uranium enrichment program.

However, the agency stresses no radiological consequences loom ahead. Moreover, they detect no extra impact on the main FEP structure itself, which already suffered heavy damage during the intense June conflict last year.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi urges all sides to show maximum restraint. He pushes for renewed diplomacy to ease tensions amid the ongoing Middle East crisis. In fact, the Natanz site has faced multiple attacks over the years, including a major cyber strike in 2010 known as Stuxnet and explosions in 2021 that set back Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

Why Natanz Matters in Iran’s Nuclear Program and Global Security

Natanz stands as one of Iran’s three main uranium enrichment plants. It hides deep underground to shield against airstrikes, yet recent events prove vulnerabilities remain. The US and Israel claim these strikes aim to curb Iran’s potential nuclear weapon development, though Tehran insists its program serves peaceful purposes only.

Satellite photos from commercial firms like Planet Labs and Maxar Technologies first revealed the damage. They show clear signs of blasts at the surface entrances, which connect to the vast tunnel network below. Despite this, IAEA inspectors continue monitoring the site under the Non-Proliferation Treaty, ensuring no diversion of nuclear materials occurs.

This incident heightens global concerns over nuclear escalation. World leaders now call for urgent talks to revive the 2015 JCPOA nuclear deal, which the US left in 2018. In the meantime, Iran vows to rebuild quickly and boost its enrichment levels in response.
